Description of the attraction
Steinbach am Attersee is a city located on the eastern shore of Lake Attersee in the federal state of Upper Austria, part of the Voecklabruck district. Steinbach is located 509 meters above sea level. The coat of arms of Steinbach am Attersee depicts a golden eagle with a red tongue on a blue background.
Steinbach was inhabited even in pre-Christian times by the Celts. The first documentary mention of the area dates back to 1276 and tells about the construction of the church.
Steinbach am Attersee stands on the shores of a picturesque lake, where various excursions are held in the summer, and an equipped beach for relaxation is organized. In addition to natural attractions, the Church of St. Andreas, which stands on a hill, deserves attention. Statues of pagan gods were found here during excavations. The exact date of the construction of the church is not known, however, documents indicate the year 1410-1420.
In Steinbach, on the shore of the lake, there is a small house made of white stone, where the famous pianist Gustav Mahler wrote symphonies No. 2 and No. 3 in 1893-1896. The house was renovated in 1983 and now houses a small exhibition dedicated to the composer.
