Description of the attraction
Sahat Kula is a tower in the historical part of Herceg Novi, which has also become a full-fledged symbol of the city. Other names for the tower: Sat Kula, Clock Tower or Torah.
Erected in 1494, then it played the role of a bell tower for the Vyborg Cathedral. Since 1753, the tower has been crowned with a massive clock with a bell. This was followed by another completion - the two-tier structure had another tier, which became the third. Architecturally, this extension is made in the classicist style.
Another function, later assigned to the tower, is a fire tower with an observation deck at the top.
During Turkish rule, the Clock Tower was the main entrance to the city. Today, a tower passage connects two key city squares.
The tower is decorated with a unique bas-relief made of charred wood "Black Madonna". This work was carried out by Afran Khozich, a Sarajevo sculptor. Its appearance on the tower is dedicated to the memory of the founder of the city, the Serbian and Montenegrin king - Tvrtko I Kotromanice. The alarm bell, which has been preserved in the tower to this day, is a gift to the townspeople of Herceg Novi from the Russian Empress Catherine II.
The clock mechanism inside the tower remained ancient until 1995, the clock was controlled with the help of heavy weights. Subsequently, it was replaced by a modern electronic one.
