Description of the attraction

The Sultanovskaya Mosque is located in the central region of Kazan, in the Old Tatar Sloboda. The mosque is located at the intersection of G. Tukaya and G. Kamala streets. This is one of the historical parts of Kazan. The Staro-Tatarskaya Sloboda is located between the Bulak Canal and Lake Nizhniy Kaban. ("Bulak" in Tatar means "sleeve", earlier the channel connected Lake Kaban with the Kazanka River). The main street of the settlement is the street im. G. Tukaya.

A mosque was built on this street in 1868. The funds for the construction were donated by the merchant Zigansha Bikmukhametovich Usmanov (1817-1872).

The mosque was built on the models of medieval Bulgaro-Tatar architecture. The decor of the minaret contains elements of Bulgarian patterns.

The Sultanovskaya Mosque is one-hall, with mezzanines. By its type, it is a mosque-jami. The minaret of the mosque is ground, high, conical, with three tiers. The entrance to the mosque is located at the corner of the building at the bottom of the minaret. A small passage connects the minaret with a double-height hall. The crossing has a hipped roof. The prayer hall is divided by a transverse wall, which forms the vestibule. The reading of the first namaz in the mosque was conducted by Sh. Marjani. During the construction of the building of the mosque, he also installed a "qibla" in the direction of Mecca.

The mosque is also called Usmanovskaya or Ziganshi mosque, in memory of the benefactor.

There were dark times in the fate of the building. In 1931, the government closed the popular mosque. The building was not used for its intended purpose for many years. The minaret of the mosque was destroyed in 1930. In 1990, according to Khalitov's project, the minaret was restored near the mosque. In 1994, the building of the mosque was returned to the community of believers.

The Sultanovskaya Mosque is a monument of Tatar religious architecture of the 19th century, made in the style of national-romantic eclecticism.
