Description of the attraction

Berane is the administrative center of the municipality, located in the north-east of the country. Today Berane is a popular tourist center with a modern look and abundance of greenery. In addition, the ancient monuments of culture and religion of Montenegro have been preserved on the territory of the city. Also among the significant historical monuments are the remains of the settlements of Budimli and Bihora.

The Monastery of St. George (in its full name - Dzhurdzhevi Stupovi, which literally translates into Russian as "George Towers") is located on the outskirts of Berane, two kilometers from the city. The monastery was erected in 1213 by the ruler of Budimlya - Stephen Pervoslav. It is believed that the fresco painting of the monastery church was carried out during the life of Tsar Dushan.

For a long time, the temple was subjected to destructive attacks by the Ottoman Empire, the structure was burned down and rebuilt about five times in its history. The beginning of the XX century marked the reconstruction of the monastery complex, however, during the First World War, it was again ravaged by the Austrian army, which turned the cells into stables, and then into a barracks and a dining room.

The monastery was completely restored in 1925. Since 1927, the monastery has been decorated with a new church bell and iconostasis. Since 2001, the monastery has been the seat of the episcopal department of the Diocese of Budimlyansk-Nikshichi. The decision to create such a department was made by the Bishops' Council of the Orthodox Serbian Church.

The architecture of the monastery church belongs to the Western Romanesque style: the oval base of a one-nave building with side vestibules and a narthex.

Since 1979, the monastery of St. George has been included in the List of World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO recognition.
