Description of the attraction
Amorgos is a Greek island in the southern part of the Aegean Sea, part of the Cyclades archipelago. The island is located near the islands of Naxos and Ios and is the easternmost island of the Cyclades. The area of the island is about 130 sq. Km.
The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was an important center of the Cycladic civilization in 3200-2000 BC, as evidenced by the ruins of ancient cities, tombs and many unique artifacts discovered by archaeologists (some of them are now kept in the National Museum of Athens).
Amorgos is one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades archipelago with delightful landscapes and magnificent natural landscapes. Amorgos is home to picturesque rocky mountains, secluded bays, beautiful beaches, azure waters of the Aegean Sea, traditional settlements with typical architecture of the region and many interesting sights.
The administrative center of the island is the town of Hora (Amorgos). It is located 400 m above sea level and is a traditional Cycladic settlement with narrow cobbled streets, white houses with blue shutters and windmills. Tourists usually visit Chora on a one-day visit to stroll the streets of this picturesque old town and visit local attractions - the medieval castle built by the Venetians in the 13th century, the Venetian tower of Gavras (16th century) and the Archaeological Museum. The town is famous for its many early Christian and Byzantine churches. Not far from Hora, there is the main attraction and visiting card of Amorgos - the monastery of Chozoviotissa, erected right in the rock (300 m above sea level) in the 11th century.
The resort centers of the island are located in an incredibly beautiful bay, the main port of the island - Katapola (consists of three settlements - Katapola, Rahidi and Xylokeratidi) and the coastal town of Egiale (the second port of the island). Both have a fairly well-developed tourist infrastructure. In Katapol, the most interesting are the Church of Panagia Katapoliani and the ruins of an ancient settlement, but Aegiale and its surroundings are primarily famous for their stunning beaches. Of course, such picturesque settlements of Amorgos as Arkesini, Vrutsi, Kolofana and Tolaria deserve special attention.
On the island of Amorgos, the shooting of the film "The Blue Abyss" by the famous French film director Luc Besson took place. After the release of the picture, the island gained worldwide fame.
