Description of the attraction

The San Pedro de Alcantara Park is located in the Bairo Alta quarter. The park, which covers an area of about 0.5 hectares, is also called the Belvedere of San Pedro de Alcantara or Miradora San Pedro de Alcantara. You can get there on the Gloria lift, a yellow funicular that goes up from Rashtauradores Square and stops at the Miradoru San Pedro de Alcantara observation deck. It should be noted that the old funicular has been a national monument since 2002.

The observation deck offers a stunning view of Liberty Avenue, the fortress walls of the Castle of St. George, the Cathedral of Lisbon. The city center and a small section of the Tagus River are visible. The balustrade of the observation deck is tiled with a map of the city showing various points of interest. The observation deck has two levels, which are connected by stairs.

The park can also be reached on foot along Calsada da Gloria. It is very calm in the park during the day. The park becomes more lively after sunset, closer to night, when the city lights are lit and the view becomes brighter. The park has a small lake and a monument to Eduardo Coelho, founder of the Diario de Noticias newspaper.

In principle, the park has an official name: it is named after Antonio Nobre, the famous Portuguese poet of the 19th century. The park was built at the beginning of the 19th century. In 2008, reconstruction works were carried out in the park, small coffee kiosks were installed on both levels. On the upper level, near the lake, there is a beautiful ash tree. There are many rose bushes on the lower level, there are benches on which you can rest. In addition, on the lower level of the park, there are sculptures of heroes from Greek and Roman mythology, among whom are Minerva and Odysseus.
