Description of the attraction
Heraklion was built by the Arabs in the 9th century. Then it was called Handakas. In the Middle Ages, the Venetians surrounded the city with a 5 km long wall. In a small square in the center of the city, there is a beautiful marble fountain named after the Venetian commander Morosini. Several Venetian houses have also survived.
The pride of the city is the richest Archaeological Museum. All the most significant exhibits of the Minoan culture are collected here: ceramics, stone carvings, carvings, sculptures, gold jewelry, metal products, beautiful frescoes from palaces and rich mansions, as well as a unique stone sarcophagus from Agia Triada.
The Historical Museum of the city presents exhibits from the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods and historical documents from the recent history of Crete. There are also local folk costumes, woven products, wood carvings, embroidery and other decorative and applied arts.
