The Museum of Fine Arts was opened on the grounds of the Gyeonghigung Palace, one of the "Five Great Palaces", the largest of them. In addition, in 2002, a branch of the museum was opened behind the Deoksugung royal residence, which was larger than the museum at Gyeonghigung Palace. The exhibits were placed in the building that used to be the High Court. Repairs were carried out, the building was re-planned and improved. The exhibition halls are located on three floors, an annex is adjacent to the building, where the administration of the museum is located. There are also lecture classes. The building was equipped with large windows that let in more natural daylight.

The museum is known for its art collection, which not only attracts tourists but is also popular with locals. The museum exhibited paintings by such famous European artists as Wang Gogh, Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall. In addition, guests can see the works of local artists, among which there are works by famous Korean artists of the twentieth century. The territory of the museum is large and beautiful, sometimes exhibitions and cultural events are held in the open air.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Seoul also has a branch located in Gwangakku, an area in the southern part of the city.
