Description of the attraction
The Mozyr St. George Church, or the Temple in honor of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious, was erected in 1995-1998 at the expense of a private entrepreneur from the city of Mozyr Chobanyan Voskan Haykazovich.
The place for the construction of the St. George Church was not chosen by chance - the Mound of Glory. Monuments to the defenders of the patronymic have been erected on the Mound of Glory. The townspeople come here to remember the soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War. On May 6, 1995, a place for the construction of a temple was consecrated in honor of the memory of all soldiers and leaders who died for their faith and fatherland.
Voskan Haykazovich Chobanyan was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 3rd degree for services to the Orthodox Church. In addition to the St. George Church, Chobanyan founded and is a member of the board of trustees of several charitable foundations. These funds help seriously ill Belarusian children to survive and take care of the orphans of the Mozyr orphanage.
In 2001, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia visited the St. George Church.
Several times the church, built with private donations from a Mozyr businessman, was desecrated and set on fire. On December 25, 2006, the wooden St. George Church was desecrated and burned by Satanists. This case of barbaric vandalism stirred up the Mozyr community. The believers responded to the call of Bishop Stefan of Turov. With their donations in March 2007, the construction of a stone church began. On November 16, 2010, gilded domes were installed on the new church.
On December 25, 2010, the new stone church was consecrated by Bishop Stefan of Turov.
