Description of the attraction
The Jumaya Mosque, the main Muslim prayer building in the city of Plovdiv, was built in 1363-1364, shortly after its conquest by the Ottoman Empire, on the site of the old Cathedral of St. Petka Tarnovskaya.
During the reign of Sultan Murad II, about 60 years after construction, the old building was destroyed, and a new one was built in its place, which we can see today.
One of the oldest religious buildings from the Ottoman period in the Balkans, the Jumaya Mosque is also one of the largest. The building organically combines elements of ancient Bulgarian and Byzantine architecture: through two rows of bricks in the walls, you can see a row of hewn stone. The building of the mosque is crowned with nine lead-covered domes. A minaret, decorated with an ornamental pattern made of red brick, rises above the northeastern part of the temple. On the inside, the walls are decorated with paintings with plant motifs and quotes from the Koran. Presumably, this painting belongs to the late 18th - early 19th centuries.
Tourists who want to visit the Jumaya Mosque should remember that this is an active mosque, and, accordingly, entrance to its prayer hall is possible only if a certain dress code is observed: no shoes, clothes that cover the whole body, and a headscarf for women. …
