Description of the attraction

On October 2, 1896, at the intersection of Nikolskaya Street (now Radishcheva Street) and Bolshaya Sergievskaya Street (now Chernyshevsky Street), the doors of the new building of the feldsher-obstetric school opened. Before that, it was located in the house of A. V. Chirikhina on the street. Moscow. The building was built specifically for the paramedic school according to the project of the city architect A. M. Salko and is considered the oldest medical educational institution in the Saratov region. In the institution of Anna Chirikhina, a forged front balcony and a main staircase inside the building were made.

In the eighteenth century, few could boast of qualified specialists in the field of obstetrics, in Russia this profession was replaced by midwives ("beregini"). The situation began to change at the end of the nineteenth century with the opening of midwife schools and maternity hospitals. Saratov paramedic school was one of the first.

In 1909, the school building was the base of the Saratov State University, consisting of only one medical faculty and was then called the Imperial Nikolsky University, which existed in the paramedic building until 1913 (the year the SSU building was opened). The first sanitary doctor of Russia, II Molleson, became the director of the entire educational building.

Since the day of its foundation, the building has been renamed six times due to a change in the profile of training, but traditionally remained faithful to the paramedic and midwife business.

Now the building of the Saratov Regional Basic Medical College (abbreviated as SOBMK), more than a hundred years later, has remained in its original form, both in architecture and in the purpose of the institution itself.
