Description of the attraction
The National Pinakothek, opened in 1932, is a major art gallery in Siena of national importance. Today it houses an extensive collection of works by Italian artists of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The collections are located in two ancient luxurious palaces in the heart of Siena - Palazzo Brigidi and Palazzo Buonsignori. The first was built in the 14th century - it is believed that it was the seat of the noble Pannokchieski family. Palazzo Buonsignori was built a century later - in the middle of the 15th century, but in the 19th century it was significantly altered: in particular, the facade of the building was changed, which today has a certain resemblance to another famous palace in Siena - Palazzo Pubblico.
The National Pinacoteca houses one of the largest collections of works by Sienese artists, the most valuable of which are works of art from the 14th and 15th centuries. Among the gallery's outstanding paintings are "Madonna of the Franciscans" and Polyptych No. 28 by Duccio di Buoninsegna, "Annunciation" by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, written in 1344, "Adoration of the Magi" by Bartolo di Fredi, "The Birth of the Virgin Mary" and "Michael the Archangel expelling the rebels angels "Domenico Beccafumi, the image of St. Peter on the throne, painted by Guido da Siena, etc. Also in the gallery are works by Ugolino di Nerio, Pietro Lorenzetti, Sassetta, Domenico di Bartolo, Taddeo di Bartolo, Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Matteo di Giovanni, Neroccio di Bartolomeo and other painters.
