Description of the attraction

The Russian magistrate is located in the Old Town of Kamenets-Podolsk, on the Armenian Square, which was previously called the Soviet, and even earlier - the Governor's. It is a powerful two-storey stone house, which housed a Russian magistrate many years ago.

Around 1658, the then famous Polish king Jan Kazimierz approves the right, which gives the Russian community the opportunity to fully use this building, without any subsequent permission from him. Thus, it was here that the administration of the Russian and Ukrainian quarters of this city began to be located. This right was retained by the Russian community for twelve years. However, in 1670, the Russian magistrate was deprived of the full right to self-government and use this premises.

Much later, this ancient and strong building was used for various meetings and all kinds of gatherings of deputies, representatives of the Podolsk nobility. And after some time, the building of the Russian magistrate was used even in the cultural sphere as a theater.

From 1805 to 1865 a theological seminary was located here. It is worth mentioning that in this theological seminary in the fifties of the nineteenth century such people as the famous Ukrainian poet Rudansky S. V. and the Ukrainian writer Svydnitsky A. P. received knowledge.

The second name of the building is “House with a Dragon” due to the characteristic gutter on the facade of this house.

Today the building is at the disposal of the administration of the Kamenets-Podolsk Historical Museum-Reserve, which is of national importance.
