Description of the attraction
The southern building of the Cannon yard of the Kazan Kremlin is the oldest building of the complex. The building was built in the first half of the 17th century. These are the production premises, in which the system of air ducts has been preserved, which is necessary in the foundry according to the Dutch technology. Inside the building, during excavations, elements of ancient brick and stone structures of the era of the Volga Bulgaria and the Kazan Khanate, dating back to the 12-16 centuries, were found.
The restoration of the Southern Building was carried out in 1998-2005. The western part of the building is adjacent to the Kremlin wall. Picturesque ruins are located near the building to the east. The ruins indicate that in the past the building was part of a U-shaped complex. The building has two floors, with a double-height space inside. The southern building is covered with a timber roof. On the roof there are tall brick pipes covered with peaked protective caps. The caps are completed with weathercocks.
The facades of the building are decorated with paddles. A decorative belt runs under the eaves of the windows. The bow-shaped arches of the windows are framed by rectangular arch-shaped architraves made of bricks and fascia. The doors are decorated with wrought iron. Wooden galleries adjoin the north wall from the outside and from the inside.
Currently, an exposition of the Museum of the History of the Kazan Kremlin is being created in the Southern Building of the Cannon Yard.
