Description of the attraction
The History Museum in Birštonas was founded in 1967. The main part of the museum's exposition was collected by local historians of the secondary school of the city. The museum has collected about 8000 exhibits to date. The main exposition has about 500 exhibits, they are constantly updated and replenished. In the collection of the museum you can see a variety of ethnographic, household, archaeological exhibits, photographs, documents, things directly related to the development of the Birštonas resort.
The collection of the Birštonas Museum can be divided into three parts. One of them allows visitors to trace the history of the development of the city from ancient times to the middle. 19th century, about how the resort began its development. Of particular value are the water supply pipe to the sanatoriums and the wooden bathtub.
The second part of the exposition is devoted to the development of the resort from the middle. 19th century to 1939 (beginning of World War II). This exposition contains photographs of the floods in Birštonas in 1958.
The third exposition tells about the development of the resort in the post-war period since 1966, the construction of new recreation areas, resorts, hospitals that are still operating today.
The most valuable exhibits in the museum are the scientific works and belongings of the doctor Jurgis Vyantskunas, he was engaged in mud therapy in Birštonas and in Lithuania since 1925, and a poster of the artist Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, which advertises Birute water.
Nowadays, the museum is actively engaged in research work, the purpose of which is to collect as much information as possible about famous people who lived and live in the resort town of Birštonas.
