Description of the attraction
The I. S. Turgenev Museum was opened on Ostozhenka Street in Moscow on October 8, 2009. The museum was opened in a house that was rented by the writer's mother, Varvara Petrovna Turgeneva, from 1840 to 1850. In this house, the writer stayed with his mother, visiting Moscow. Sometimes he lived for a long time. Many prominent people of the epoch of the forties of the 19th century visited here.
The house with white columns was once on the outskirts of Moscow. It is a wooden mansion with a portico resting on six Ionic columns from the early 19th century. The mansion was built in the "Moscow Empire" style, which is popular in the post-fire buildings of Moscow.
The well-known story "Mumu" takes place in the house on Ostozhenka. Varvara Petrovna Turgeneva herself served as the prototype of the cruel boyary woman who forced the janitor to get rid of the "nasty dog". In this house Varvara Petrovna died in 1851. Turgenev wrote his story two years after her death. Almost all the people living in the house became the prototypes of the heroes of the story "Mumu". Muscovites have long called the house on Ostozhenka "Mumu's House".
The choice of a house for the museum is also due to the fact that it is included in the register of protected areas. A protected area has been preserved behind the building. This makes it possible to completely restore the entire complex of the Moscow city estate, makes the museum more attractive to visitors, and also provides an opportunity to engage in educational and educational activities.
The exposition currently in the Turgenev Museum is housed in a suite of halls. It has a memorial character. Exposition “Moscow. Ostozhenka. Turgenev”, introduces the Moscow life of the writer, his literary environment, creativity, his friends, family and events related to the house on Ostozhenka.
