Description of the attraction
The Church of St. Ignatius of Mariupol is the city church of the Donetsk Metallurgy Plant in the city of Donetsk. On the territory of Ukraine, this is the first church built and located on the territory of an industrial enterprise. The temple itself was named in honor of Saint Ignatius of Mariupol, who was the Metropolitan of Kafai and Gotfei and the founder of Mariupol.
In 2003, in February, the place where the temple was supposed to be located was consecrated. And in April of the same year, the foundation of the temple was laid. In June, the walls of the building were already completed and a dome with a cross was installed. In July 2003, the opening and solemn consecration of the temple took place. It was completed in five months. By 2007, the painting of the walls was completed and an extension to the altar part - the sacristy - was built.
Since 2004, the community of this church has been publishing an appendix to the Metallurg newspaper, which is called Ignatievsky Blagovest. Archpriest Georgy Gulyaev is the rector of the Church of Ignatiev.
In 2011, in honor of the Metallurgist Day and 8 years since the day the temple was consecrated, the 10th anniversary of the day when a section for pouring the bell was created at the plant, as well as the 140th anniversary of the plant itself, a slotted bell was made, which was installed near the temple. This bell was made at the factory itself, and it is unique, because before that there were only three bells with holes in them.
This unique bell took two and a half months to make. It depicts four icons. And there are carved crosses on all four sides. It is made of bell bronze and weighs 388 kilograms, its height is 84 cm, and its diameter is 80 cm.
And in February 2012, a branch of the Museum of the History of the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant, which is dedicated to Ignatius of Mariupol, was opened in the church.
