Description of the attraction

In addition to the magnificent natural landscapes and picturesque landscapes, the Irish Killarney National Park is famous for various historical and architectural attractions, among which the Franciscan monastery - Macross Abbey, or rather, its ruins, certainly deserves special attention. The ancient monastery is located in the very center of the reserve, about ten minutes walk from the equally interesting Macross House and is available to visitors all year round and absolutely free.

Macross Abbey was founded by Franciscan monks in 1448 on the ruins of an older monastery, erected, according to legend, by Saint Fionan as early as the 6th century. During its turbulent history, the monastery was repeatedly attacked and robbed, and the monks themselves were forced to leave the holy monastery several times. Finally, the monks left the abbey at the end of the 17th century.

Today, Macross Abbey is in a rather deplorable state, although the monastery walls staunchly resist time, and you can still see the church, the bell tower and the central courtyard surrounded by a vaulted arcade. In the center of the courtyard grows a huge old yew tree, which, according to the Irish, is as old as the abbey itself.

Near the monastery walls, you will see an old cemetery where the remains of some family members of the once influential local clans are buried. Such famous Irish poets as O'Donahue, O'Sullivan and O'Reilly found their last refuge here. The cemetery of Macross Abbey is still active today, therefore, next to the old tombstones overgrown with moss and rickety crosses, the inscriptions on which are no longer distinguishable, there are fresh burials.

Muckross Abbey is the ruins of a Franciscan monastery founded in 1448. The Franciscans (Latin Ordo Fratrum Minorum; "lesser brothers") are a Catholic mendicant monastic order founded by St. Francis of Assisi near Spoleto in 1208 with the aim of preaching to the people apostolic poverty, asceticism, and love for one's neighbor.

Macross Abbey was used for the burial of the Irish poets O'Sullivan and O'Donahue.

One of the sights of the monastery is the ancient yew with red bark. Near the abbey there is an old cemetery, which is still in operation. It is interesting that, among others, two famous Irish poets are buried here: O'Sullivan, O'Donahue.
