Description of the attraction
Probably the most famous creation of modern architects in Bratislava is the New Bridge, which until recently was called the SNP (Slovak Popular Uprising) Bridge and was only recently renamed. But most of the townspeople still call this bridge by the old way out of habit. The same name can be seen on some maps and information boards in trams and trolleybuses.
The new bridge isn't all that new. It was built in 1967 and was the second structure connecting the two banks of the river in Bratislava. Accordingly, the first bridge is called Old.
The new bridge is the longest structure in the world, based on only one pylon, which is located on the shore. The plane of the bridge is supported by steel ropes, that is, the river flows unhindered under the bridge, without encountering bridge supports. The pylon is crowned with an unusual design reminiscent of a "flying saucer". There is a restaurant in it, which is called “UFO”. In addition, there is an observation deck, where a special elevator leads. The rise to the site is paid, to the restaurant, which can be called rather a bar, because alcoholic drinks, cocktails and desserts are served there (at very reasonable prices), you can climb without a ticket.
However, this is not the main feature of this structure. During the construction of the New Bridge, it was necessary to destroy part of the historic quarters of Bratislava, including the Moorish-style synagogue, erected at the end of the 19th century. It was located right next to St. Martin's Cathedral. To make it easy to access the bridge, about 380 buildings were destroyed, which belonged mainly to the local Jewish community. Now, near the bridge connecting the city center with the Petrzalka sleeping area, there is an important transport interchange.
