The Moscow Art Academic Theater named after M. Gorky, existing today, was founded in 1987. The Drama Theater under the artistic direction of Tatiana Doronina considers itself the successor of the Moscow Art Theater, which existed since 1898 under the artistic direction of KS Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko.

In 1987, ON Efremov initiated the division of the theater into two different creative teams. Moscow Art Theater Chekhov under the leadership of O. Efremov and the Moscow Art Theater. M. Gorky under the leadership of T. Doronina.

Moscow Art Theater M. Gorky is located on Tverskoy Boulevard. The theater building was built in 1973. The initiative for the construction belonged to the then Minister of Culture E. A. Furtseva. Moscow Art Theater M. Gorky carefully preserves the traditions of the old Moscow Art Theater. After the division of the theater, the Art Theater under the leadership of T. Doronina defined its further path as "the path of returning to the great Stanislavsky."

In October 1987, the theater opened with the premiere of the play "At the Bottom" by M. Gorky. The theater has remained faithful to the traditions laid down by the founders of the Moscow Art Theater. Since then, the theater has staged more than seventy performances based on the works of Russian and foreign classics. Famous performances - "The White Guard", "Zoykina's Apartment", "The Cherry Orchard", "Mad Jourdain", "Vassa Zheleznova".

On the stage of the Art Theater, performances staged in previous years are still staged. This is Maeterlinck's Bluebird. There is a performance restored by T. Doronina based on the director's drawing by Nemirovich-Danchenko - “Three Sisters” by A. P. Chekhov. Famous theater performances: The Mystery of the Door of the Regan Hotel, The Invisible Friend, Her Friends, The Old Actress for the Role of Dostoevsky's Wife, The Invisible Friend, A Hundred Steps from the Holiday, The White Guard, The Break.

Many famous actors have worked in the troupe of the theater in different years: Aristarkh Livanov, Yuri Gorobets, Mikhail Kabanov, Gennady Kochkozharov, Nikolai Penkov, Lyubov Pushkareva, Margarita Yuryeva and many others. In our time, the theater is still directed by the People's Artist of the USSR T. V. Doronina.

The theater's repertoire includes plays based on the works of classics - Gorky, Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov. Based on the works of Soviet playwrights - Rozov, Vampilov, Arbuzov. Based on the works of contemporary authors - Polyakov, Rasputin, Malyagin.
