Description of the attraction

One of the iconic sights of the city of Khabarovsk is the majestic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, installed on Cathedral Square.

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared thanks to the parishioners of Khabarovsk, who wanted a temple dedicated to the great feast of the Assumption to appear in their city. In 1870 the Irkutsk archbishop allocated a large sum of money for the construction of this temple. In the same year, the local authorities decided to build a temple.

It took 15 years to build the cathedral. During the construction work, many obstacles arose, but they only strengthened the faith of the parishioners. The author of the project of the cathedral was the engineer S. Bera. The well-known engineer-colonel V. Mooro supervised all construction works.

By 1887, the cathedral with gold-domed domes became a real decoration not only in the main city square, but in the whole of Khabarovsk. At the beginning of the same year, the Khabarovsk priests held their first service here. In December 1890 the consecration of the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos took place. By 1905, the construction of all the main parts of the temple was completed - the shining gold of the five domes simply dazzled everyone around.

In 1930, the cathedral was brutally plundered and almost completely destroyed. The magnificent iconostasis, magnificent icons, frescoes on the walls were lost. In June 1930, the question of dismantling the church was raised in order to liberate the city square. In July 1936, a wide mound was removed, which served as the foundation of the cathedral, and in the early autumn of 1937, asphalt was laid on the square.

The revival of the cathedral began only 80 years later. The temple was rebuilt. At the end of 2001, the domes of the long-suffering temple shone again on the banks of the Amur. The former architectural style of the temple is embodied in a memorable chapel. The main shrine of the chapel is the icon of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
