Description of the attraction

The Folk Art Museum is one of the most interesting and informative museums in the city of Limassol. It began its work in 1985 and is located in a beautiful, renovated two-story building of the 19th century, which is located on St. Andreas Street.

The collection of the museum, mainly consisting of rare and ancient items from the late 19th - early 20th centuries, is housed in six large halls. There are collected objects of art, household items, clothing, jewelry, tools and even furniture made by folk craftsmen of Cyprus - more than 500 exhibits in total.

For example, the museum has an excellent collection of table china, which includes about 30 dishes made in various styles, some of which were made in 1725. And in other halls you can see a large loom, a bed, casual clothes and traditional national costumes decorated with exquisite embroidery, beaded products, clay products, tapestries, paintings. Of particular note are the bed linen and wonderful bedspreads that Cypriots collected as a dowry for the bride and traditionally kept in decorative chests, also on display in the museum.

It is noteworthy that the collection of the museum is constantly replenished, new exhibits appear there, which come to it from all corners of the island. This is often due to local residents who donate antiques found in attics and basements to the institution.

In 1989, the museum received the Europa Nostra award, which is awarded for the restoration and maintenance of cultural sites in Europe.
