Description of the attraction

The Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is located in the Leninsky district of Donetsk, at st. Tushinskaya, 7. This cathedral is considered one of the ancient places of worship in the city. Nowadays, the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas Cathedral is the main temple of the city.

The building of the temple was erected in 1896 in the Donetsk town of Yuzovka. Originally it was a church-school. It remained that way until the arrival of Soviet power. With the advent of Soviet times and before the start of the Great Patriotic War, only a school was located here. During the war, this temple was reopened and served as a regular parish church. This was the case until 1988.

With the onset of a loyal attitude of the state to religion, the then ruling bishop, Metropolitan Sergius, who governed the Donetsk-Lugansk diocese, determined the status of the St. Nicholas Church - the cathedral. And since then, the center of the diocese has been moved from Horlivka to the city of Donetsk with the beginning of the construction of diocesan institutions.

The complete reconstruction of the temple was carried out in the last decade under Metropolitan of Donetsk and Mariupol, Vladyka Hilarion. The lower church, built in 1946, was in a rather dilapidated state. After its renovation, in 2007, it was consecrated in honor of the Monk Hegumen Nikon of Radezhsky. Since then, regular services have been held in the cathedral. Two years before this event, on December 25, the upper temple was consecrated.
