Description of the attraction
Castel Lamberto is an ancient castle located in the town of Lunes, in the commune of Brunico in the Italian province of Bolzano. You can get to the castle directly from Bruneck - it will take about an hour to walk, and the trip by car is only a few minutes.
Castel Lamberto stands at an altitude of 990 meters above sea level, at the very top of a cliff that faces the narrow Rienza gorge in the Val Pusteria valley. The first mentions of it are found in 1090 - in one of the documents it is said about a plot of land with a chapel of San Lantpertum. The castle itself was built at the beginning of the 12th century by order of the Riscon family, subjects of the bishops of Bressanone. After the Riscon family ceased to exist in the 14th century, the bishops handed over the castle from their hands - in particular, the Counts of Gorizia were its owners. Later, the castle was destroyed twice - in 1336 and 1346.
At the end of the 17th century, the next bishop of Bressanone handed over Castel Lamberto to Johann Winkler von Kolz, whose descendants owned the castle until 1811, when it became the property of the Hauptmann family, which still owns it to this day.
Particularly noteworthy on the territory of Castel Lamberto is a small chapel built in the 17th century and restored in 1962. This chapel is very popular among the inhabitants of the surrounding towns and villages - until the First World War, Saint Vilgefortis, the patroness of girls seeking to get rid of annoying admirers, was revered in it.
