Description of the attraction

The Church of St. George the Victorious is located 8 kilometers from Izborsk, in the village of Senno Pechora district of the Pskov region. It was built in 1562. The church is one-domed, three-apse, four-pillar, crowned with a light drum with a bulbous head and a cross. The main cubic volume is represented by a quadrangle covered with a hipped roof. On the east side, it is adjoined by lowered semi-cylindrical apses, on the north - a low extension, on the south - a chapel, on the west - a vestibule from the beginning of the 20th century. All these outbuildings are obscured by the old four-sided facades.

The decor of the four-sided facades is modest. It is typical for Pskov churches of the 16th century: the walls have a three-part division with shoulder blades, which are connected at the top by 2-lobed creeping arches, and in the center - by semicircular ones. The drum is decorated with a traditional ornament consisting of 2 rows of a runner and a curb. The belt is crowned with a row, which is represented by stepped semicircular niches and an arcature belt. On the cardinal points there are 4 slit-like openings, above them there are gable sandriks. The head of the temple is covered with iron, on it are depicted - stars painted with ocher. The decor on the apses has not been preserved; on the small side apses can be seen from the 1st old slotted window opening.

St. George's temple has four pillars, the western pillars are round in plan, the eastern ones are rounded. The light drum stands on raised supporting arches. The korobovy vaults cover the ends of the cross, and the concha - the apse. The western wall is equipped with a wooden choir with a tent, which has an ancient slotted window opening. Now it is laid. There are similar window openings on the southern wall of the quadrangle at the choir level, in the deacon's and the altar, the rest are late or hewn. At the base of the apse conch there are 2 rows of voices; 5 rows of voices are located above the arch of the eastern wall, in the tympans of the transept, under the supporting arches and on the sails. The altar has preserved remains of wooden ties on 2 levels.

There is a tent in the southwest corner, probably there was a side-chapel here, which was abolished after the construction of the south side-chapel. The northern annex was erected, most likely, on the site of the ancient side-altar. Its overlap has been lost. The overlaps of the narthex and the south aisle with the narthex are flat. All roofs are covered with iron.

The St. George Church has a four-tiered iconostasis dating from the middle of the 19th century, with a pedestal and a pommel in the center - this is the icon "God of hosts". In terms of forms, the iconostasis is austere, with characteristic horizontal and vertical divisions, decorated with carvings, concentrated mainly on the "Royal Doors" and entablatures. The iconostasis is painted with burgundy oil paint, the details are bronze.

The adjoining church also has an iconostasis. It dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The iconostasis is three-tiered, with a pedestal, in the form of a solid wall, painted with white oil paint, details - bronze.

Next to the temple there is a belfry, which is a freestanding, high, square structure covered with a sloping iron roof. It is built from a limestone slab. The height of the belfry is 18 meters. Preserved 2 large and 2 small bells.

There is a cemetery around the Church of St. George the Victorious. It is surrounded by a stone fence. There is a gate here. They are very unusual - with a peculiar wavy volume, dating back to the second half of the 18th century. The gate has 2 openings: a large one (with a wide arch and a keeled end) and a small one (smaller in size, lateral). There is a rectangular niche for the icon above the small opening. The gate, like the belfry, is made of local limestone slabs, plastered and whitewashed.
