The Nikolaev Regional Art Museum named after V. Vereshchagin is one of the most popular urban centers of cultural and aesthetic education, located in one of the best buildings in the city - an architectural monument of the second half of the 19th century. down the street Bolshaya Morskaya.
The Nikolaev Museum was created in 1914 as a monument to the famous Russian battle painter V. Vereshchagin. Its founders were members of the city society of art lovers. I. Repin rendered great help. Highly appreciating the work of this artist, he believed that crowning the memory of Vereshchagin is primarily a duty and a matter of honor for all contemporaries and compatriots.
The first collection of the art museum was housed in the building where the guardhouse of the military department was once. It included personal belongings donated by the widow of V. Vereshchagin, as well as works donated by the St. Petersburg Russian Museum and the Academy of Arts.
In the 20th century, the museum collection went through two of the most difficult trials - the years of the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War. The period 1941-1944 became especially difficult for the museum. when all the museum funds were on the verge of extinction, and only by accidental coincidence the basis of the collections was preserved - the works of V. Vereshchagin and several other works.
In the post-war period, the museum not only restored its museum potential, but was also able to increase it. As a result, today the regional art museum. V. Vereshchagin, in terms of the quality and number of collected works, is one of the best in Ukraine. Nowadays, more than 10,000 exhibits are kept in the museum's funds, which represent a special artistic chronicle not only of Ukraine, but also of many other countries.
