Description of the attraction

The monument to Leonid Bykov is not just a monument in memory of the great actor and director, it is a symbol dedicated to all the pilots who died in World War II. No wonder this monument was erected not far from the Walk of Fame.

The main idea behind the creation of this monument was, of course, the famous film "Only Old Men Go to Battle", which tells about the courage and heroism of Soviet pilots. That is why it was decided to perpetuate the memory of the dead soldiers in the image of Leonid Bykov in the role of Captain Titarenko. It seems that he has just returned from a combat mission and sat down to rest on the cockpit of his plane.

They tried to install the monument in such a way that there was a lot of space around it and the impression was created that the plane was on the runway. The panorama that opens from here is also very good - the Dnieper is visible in the distance, and next to it is the Walk of Fame and the Eternal Flame burning in it.

The author of the project of the monument to the fallen pilots was the sculptor Vladimir Shchur, who is known for such works as the monument to Panikovsky (on Proriznaya Street), Prona Prokopovna and Svirid Golokhvastov (on Andreevsky Spusk) and the architect Gorodetsky (located in the Passage). The construction of the monument was facilitated by such patrons as Vladimir Butko, Fedor Shpig and Alexander Andriyaka.

Choosing an image for the monument, the sculptor Vladimir Shchur settled on the character of Leonid Bykov, since it is not easy to find such a recognizable person and, at the same time, loved by everyone. In addition, it is hardly possible to find as many monuments to the actor on the territory of the former Soviet Union as they are installed in Ukraine to Leonid Bykov - this person is so popular.

The inauguration of the monument to the fallen pilots took place in November 2001.
