Description of the attraction
The ancient fortress of the city of Kamyanets-Podilsky is one of the greatest architectural monuments of Ukraine. Today it is often called the "Old Castle". The first documentary mentions of the fortress in the city of Kamenets-Podolsky are found in 1374 in a letter written by Prince Yuri Koriatovich. The towers and walls of the famous fortress were built of stone and wood. The fortress has always served as the defense of the city, and since it was located at the entrance to it, it was a strategically important defensive point.
The fortress has a large number of towers: Small Western, New (Big) Western, Karmalyukova or Papskaya, Kolpak, Lyashskaya, Daynaya, Rozhanka, Lyantskoronskaya tower, Komendantskaya, Vostochnaya Novaya, Tenchinskaya. All towers are interconnected by defensive walls; there are also barracks and a siege well on the territory. The day tower is the oldest.
In the 17th century, it was decided to add earthen bastions to the fortress to resist enemies and even better fortify it. But despite this, in 1672 the Turkish army was able to take the fortress by storm. Today we can see in the fortress a reconstruction of the scene of this battle, the leader of which was M. Pototsky. You can also see the Papal Tower, in which the legendary freedom fighter Ustym Karmalyuk sat.
The old fortress in Kamenets is considered the hallmark of the city. The legendary city is proud of its landmark and is always happy to show it to its guests.
