Description of the attraction
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in the city of Novosibirsk is a working Orthodox church located at the beginning of Sovetskaya Street and Red Avenue. This is one of the first stone buildings in the city.
In 1895, local residents appealed to Bishop Makarii (Nevsky) of Tomsk with a request to build a church in honor of Prince Alexander Nevsky. For which the blessing was received. The construction of the cathedral began in 1897 and ended in 1899. However, it is still not known who, after all, was the author of the project of the temple. Some believe that the project was drawn up by the architect-artist K. Lygin, others - that N. Solovyov, and still others call the architects Kosyakov and Prussak as the authors of the project. At the same time, everyone is of the same opinion that the project of the St. Petersburg church was taken as the basis for the building of the cathedral.
The consecration of the temple took place immediately after the completion of construction in December 1899. In 1904, two side chapels were consecrated - in the name of George the Victorious and in honor of Nicholas the Wonderworker. In 1915 the cathedral was given the status of a cathedral.
In 1937 the cathedral was closed. Attempts were made to blow up the temple, but only the partitions were destroyed. After it was closed, it housed the Promstroyproekt design institute, and then the West Siberian newsreel studio. During this time, additional ceilings were arranged in the temple, and as a result, the painting was completely destroyed.
In August 1989, the Novosibirsk City Council returned the church to the believers. In May 1991, the cathedral was consecrated by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexei II. After the transfer of the temple, restoration work began: the bell tower was rebuilt, the domes were blocked, the internal layout was restored, the fragments of the outer walls were renewed, the inner walls were plastered, the iconostasis was partially restored and the church utensils were purchased anew.
Near the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral there is a small brick baptismal church, consecrated in honor of John the Baptist.
