Description of the attraction
One of the most revered local saints is the first Serbian Archbishop Sava. He became a real symbol of faith, which did not like the Turkish conquerors at all. To shake the strength of the spirit of the Orthodox of Montenegro and Serbia, at the end of the 16th century, the Ottomans burned the relics of the saint. From them only the hand remained, which is kept on the territory of Montenegro.
In honor of Saint Sava of Serbia, a large church was built in the southern part of the city of Tivat, near the Adriatic highway. The first stone was laid in its foundation in 1938. And this happened only after the solemn consecration by the Patriarch of Serbia Gavrila Dozic. All plans related to the construction of the church were disrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War. At first, the local residents had no time for the church of St. Sava. After the end of the war, the welfare of the parishioners left much to be desired, so the timing of the construction of the temple was postponed indefinitely. Only by 1968 the church was built.
Two architects worked on the temple, erected in a neo-Byzantine manner: Alexander Deroko and Bogdan Nestorovich. The spacious church, 65 meters high, is crowned with a huge dome. Many guides specifically emphasize that the Tivat Church of St. Sava is larger in size than many Orthodox churches, because it covers an area of 7, 5 thousand square meters. m. The local Orthodox community did not skimp on the interior decoration of the church. Here you can see the richly decorated iconostasis and individual icons painted by both local and foreign painters. The temple is open to the public.
