Description of the attraction

The city of Biograd na Moru is a fairly large resort located a few tens of kilometers from Zadar. One of its main attractions is the City Museum, the exhibits of which tell about the rich past of Biograd, which until the 12th century was the place of coronation of the Croatian rulers, and its environs. The Museum of Local Lore is located in the central part of Biograd, on the seashore, in a two-storey building, which is an architectural and historical monument. It was erected on the ruins of the medieval wall that once surrounded the city at the end of the 18th century. The Qatari District Court, founded by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1876, worked there for many years.

The exposition of the Biograd Regional Museum can be divided into several parts: archaeological, ethnographic, historical and artistic. Another section of the museum is dedicated to finds raised from a sunken ship of the 16th century. It is he who arouses the greatest interest among museum visitors. Here is a collection of more than 10 thousand items recovered from the holds of a sunken Venetian merchant ship. The vessel was discovered by local fishermen in 1967.

The archaeological collection of the museum includes artifacts discovered during excavations of prehistoric settlements and objects of religious worship of the 11th-12th centuries. Noteworthy is the lapidarium - a collection of stone tombstones and statues.

The gallery on the ground floor of the building often hosts temporary exhibitions dedicated to the history of Biograd. Here you can see examples that are not included in the permanent exhibition of the museum.
