Description of the attraction
In 2002, when exactly 2 thousand years have passed since the Baptism of Macedonia, which the whole country celebrated on a large scale, a majestic monument was built on the Krstovar peak of Mount Vodno, located above the city of Skopje - the Cross with a height of 66 meters, which makes it the largest crucifix. not only Europe, but the whole world. It was named the Millennium Cross. It is visible from a distance of 30 km. At night, it is illuminated with bright lamps, standing out against the background of the dark sky. Since the Cross can be seen from anywhere in the city, it also serves as a good landmark for tourists.
The construction of the monument became possible with the financial support of the Macedonian Orthodox Church and the government of the country. Donations also came from individuals. Oliver Petrovsky and Jovan Stefanovsky-Jean were invited as architects. The cross was erected on the site of a previous similar monument, only of a more modest size. In 2008, during one of the state monuments, an elevator built into the structure of the Millennium Cross was inaugurated. Since then, he has taken everyone to the observation deck located at the top. From there, a breathtaking panorama of the entire city opens up.
Previously, you had to climb to the foot of the Millennium Cross, but since 2011, a cable car leads to it. Its project was prepared by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Inpuma Design Center. The construction of the funicular began in 2010. From the glass cabins of the cable car, you can see the whole of Skopje at a glance.
