Description of the attraction

The Kassa Dash Mudash Arts Center is located in the village of Calheta, which is located on Madeira, a vegetated volcanic island that is washed by the warm currents of the Gulf Stream. Since the 15th century, the island has been a crossroads of trade routes for many continents. There are many museums on the island, and one of them deserves special attention due to its location.

The Kassa Dash Mudash Arts Center has an amazing location - it sits at the top of a promontory, above the Atlantic Ocean (600 feet). The center is located in two buildings, one of which dates back to the 16th century, and the other is more modern. The old building previously belonged to the granddaughter of João Gonçalves Zarco, who is considered the discoverer of the island of Madeira. This mansion is located almost on the edge of a cliff. Visitors who come to the center by car can park their car in the garage below. The center can be accessed either from the terrace or from the garage.

From the open-air terrace, visitors can enter the new museum building with an interesting design, built by the famous local architect Paulo David. Paulo David was awarded the prestigious architecture award in 2012 "Alvar Aalto Medal" as an architect who creates buildings that are in harmony with the environment. The new premises of the museum are divided into different sections. One wing houses galleries and a conference room that can accommodate 220 people, the other has a reading room, library and bookstore, a cafeteria and a restaurant. The museum very often hosts thematic meetings and workshops on art, as well as exhibitions of paintings and photographs and music concerts.
