Description of the attraction
The Railway Museum in York is part of the British National Science and Industry Museum. It presents the history of the development of railways and their impact on the development of society as a whole. The museum has won a number of prestigious awards, including the 2001 European Museum of the Year.
The museum exhibits more than 300 units of rolling stock, including more than 100 locomotives. All of them either drove on the roads of Great Britain or were built here. Besides them, hundreds of thousands of different exhibits are offered to the attention of visitors on an area of 8 hectares. It is the largest museum of its kind in the UK.
The history of railway transport is represented here by various types of locomotives and wagons. This museum also has its own record holders: the "Flying Scotsman" train is a train that has not changed its route and name for the longest time. It has been operating since 1862 on the London - Edinburgh route. The fastest steam locomotive - class A4 steam locomotive № 4468 "Mallard" on July 3, 1938 on a slight incline accelerated to a speed of 202.7 km / h. The museum also displays an extensive collection of signaling equipment, posters and drawings, tickets, plates, railroad uniforms, clocks, drawings, as well as a huge number of operating train models. The model of the ring railway has been operating in the museum since 1982, and it is not known who gets more pleasure in the museum - adults or children.
