Description of the attraction
The Chester Zoo is located in Upton by Chester, a suburb of Chester. It is one of the largest zoos in the UK, covering an area of 160 hectares and home to over 7,000 animals of 400 species. Many species are listed in the Red Book.
In addition, 265 plant species grow on the territory of the zoo, which are also under threat of destruction. The zoo conducts a program for the reproduction of rare species in captivity and considers it a priority to preserve the diversity of the living world. It also supports reintroduction programs in other countries.
Since its founding in 1931, Chester Zoo, always considered one of the best in the world, has paid great attention to scientific work. But scientific research is the underwater part of the iceberg, hidden from the eyes of visitors. The public is watching the animals with great interest, especially since the zoo is trying to do without trellises and cages wherever possible.
Chester Zoo is the first in the United Kingdom to breed Asian elephants in captivity. Now there are eight individuals in the herd, including babies. For them, a section of the Indian rain forest has been recreated, and in addition to elephants, birds, squirrels, turtles and other inhabitants live there.
The jaguar enclosure is divided into four parts. Two represent the rainforest and the arid savannah, while the other two have rivers and ponds for jaguars to swim freely. The zoo is home to four spotted jaguars and one black one.
The most expensive project in the history of the zoo is keeping orangutans from Borneo and Sumatra. The efforts were not in vain, and on January 29, 2008, the zoo celebrated the birth of a baby Sumatran orangutan. In addition to orangutans, great apes in the zoo are represented by the largest chimpanzee colony in Europe.
Also in the zoo live rhinos, babirus (wild Asian pigs with huge fangs), spectacled bears, vicuñas, capybaras, tapirs, giant otters, a variety of monkeys and many other animals.
