Description of the attraction
Luza Castle is located 3 kilometers from the city of Lausan, which is located in the Coimbra district. A more correct name for the castle is Arose Castle. This name comes from the village of Arose, abandoned by the inhabitants around 1513.
Legend has it that King Arose fled from the barbarians led by Prince Lusush, who occupied the city of Konimbriga, and found refuge in this village, where his secret refuge was located, Arose Castle. The king was with his daughter, they had the royal treasury. According to legend, Prince Lusush and Peralta, the king's daughter, saw each other and fell madly in love. Lusush chased them, hoping to connect with his beloved. The king, in order to protect his daughter, locked her in the castle along with his treasures, and he went to northern Africa for reinforcements. The king never returned, and no one knows what happened to the princess. They say that the princess is still in the castle and you can even see her crying. The name of Prince Lusush changed over time and began to sound like Luza. There is also an assumption that the first mention of the castle dates back to the 10th century.
Luza Castle played an important role in the battles against the Moors. Unfortunately, today only a watchtower, walls and gun towers have survived from the formidable fortress. The castle was built of local stone. Since 1910, Luza Castle has been included in the list of monuments of national importance. For a long time, restoration works were carried out in the castle, which were completed in 1985 and allow us to enjoy the look of this ancient, but small in size castle.
