Description of the attraction
The Capuchin Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angel is the main attraction of the city of Vinnytsia, located on Soborna Street, 12. The temple was built in 1746 in the individual style of the Tuscan Baroque under the headman of Vinnytsia L. Kalinovsky.
In 1746, Ludwik Kalinowski, having founded a Capuchin monastery, erected a stone church under it. For the construction of the temple, the Vinnitsa headman allocated part of his estates, as well as the funds that he received as a result of the trial with Count Pototsky. In 1796, eleven monasteries located on the territory of modern Ukraine united and created an independent Capuchin province.
In 1830-1831 and in January 1863, there were great uprisings of two peoples: Polish and Ukrainian against Russian domination. Such uprisings became decisive for the Capuchins in central Ukraine and Volyn. As a result, all active monasteries were liquidated. The monastery in Vinnitsa lasted the longest. In 1888, by order of the tsarist authorities, the Capuchin Church was disbanded and transformed into a barracks, but the church still remained to act as a Catholic church. In 1931, the temple was closed by a decree of the Soviet authorities. In 1988, the Capuchins returned to the territory of Ukraine. At first, the brothers helped the priests in the parish work, and later - they bought their houses. They returned to Vinnitsa in 1992.
In 2003, with the assistance of the regional state administration, restoration was carried out, as a result of which the facade of the temple was restored. Today the Capuchin Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angel belongs to the Catholic community of the city of Vinnitsa.
