Description of the attraction
One of the famous sights of Ulm - the Chapel of St. Sebastian - was built in the Gothic style. The year 1415 is considered, if not the date of construction, then the year when this chapel was first mentioned in connection with the city. For almost a hundred years, one of the Franciscan churches was located here, in other words, the building was used for its intended purpose.
Located in the Auf dem Kreuz quarter, the chapel was almost completely destroyed and was not rebuilt for a very long time for various reasons. However, in the 20th century, the city authorities turned their attention to a building of undoubted historical value. Among the monuments of the Middle Ages in the chapel, the cross vaults of the choir, unique in their kind, have survived to this day. In addition, the frieze of the nave, decorated with traditional ornament for those times, intricately woven of royal lilies, is also interesting.
At the very beginning of the 18th century, the chapel building was changed, in particular, it received a half-timbered superstructure in the form of a second floor. I must say that the exterior of the building has become more attractive from a tourist point of view. In the 20th century, architects worked hard to restore the building and now it houses one of the famous galleries, in which many contemporary artists consider it an honor to exhibit.
