Description of the attraction

The Historical Museum in Samokov contains more than 30 thousand exhibits, which are divided into several main expositions: ethnographic, archaeological, art history, as well as photo expositions.

Initially, in the 30s of the last century, famous artists Vasil Zakhariev and Naum Khadzhimladenov decided to place their collection in the National Library. Khadzhimladenov became the first curator of the museum exhibition, and Zakhariev developed the rules of the museum, which were approved by the Ministry of Education, which helped to formalize the collection of exhibits as a museum value. Two more Bulgarian artists and archaeologists prepared a thematic plan for the upcoming expositions and described all the collected exhibits. All this served as the beginning of the creation of a full-fledged city historical museum.

In 1937, an exhibition of folk art was organized, which marked the beginning of the ethnographic collection. In 1958, an exposition dedicated to the Bulgarian Renaissance was completed, and in 1966 they finished working on expositions on the theme of the revolutionary and resistance movement in Bulgaria.

The ethnographic collection of the museum is considered one of the very first works of the founders of the museum and is constantly updated throughout the entire period of its existence. Here you can find textiles and national costumes, jewelry and traditional crafts for the region.

The archaeological collection includes exhibits from the Thracian period. The museum exhibits a large number of ancient ceramics.

The art history exposition presents to the museum visitors icons, manuscripts, prints and documents that cover most of the famous masters and art schools that developed in Samokov and the Balkans.
