In Petrozavodsk, there is the largest concert institution that actively develops musical and concert activities - the State Philharmonic. It is located on Kirov Street in a modern building, which houses the Big Concert Hall for 481 seats. In the spacious foyer of the second floor, exhibitions of painting, photography, graphics, and works of applied art are held.
The Philharmonic includes the following concert groups - the Onego Symphony Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments. The artistic directors and chief conductors of these groups are Marius Stravinsky and Gennady Mironov, Honored Worker of Culture of the Karelian Republic, Honored Worker of Art of the Russian Federation. The department, which includes various ensembles and soloists, is called the touring philharmonic, there are also departments - marketing and musical education.
This region had its own musical traditions for a long time, but only in January 1939, the State Karelian-Finnish Philharmonic Society was created by the Council of People's Commissars. Previously, it was located on Karl Marx Avenue and included the Symphony Orchestra, the Kantele folk song and dance ensemble, the vocal and variety ensemble, and the State Choir. The philharmonic society then included about 300 people.
Since its inception, the Philharmonic has become the center of musical life in the republic. Already in October 1939, she opened her first official music season. And after that, Symphony concerts were regularly held, in which the best works of foreign and Russian classical music were performed, the works of Karelian authors sounded.
From the first months of the war, the Philharmonic Society organized several concert brigades, which performed with concerts of classical music, with the works of poets and composers of Karelia at mobilization points, at the construction of defensive structures. During that difficult period, the musicians gave more than 500 concerts. But starting from the end of 1941, the activities of the Philharmonic were temporarily suspended. Some of the performers moved to the Musical Comedy Theater, the Kantele ensemble was evacuated to Belomorsk. The philharmonic society restored its activity in February 1944. It consisted of the Kantele State National Ensemble and a front-line brigade of artists.
In the postwar years, the Philharmonic Society was regularly engaged in musical and educational activities. Famous conductors, singers, instrumentalists were invited. Concerts were held throughout the republic, more than 28 settlements were covered by the activities of concert brigades. A music lecture hall was opened, artists from other philharmonic societies, in particular the Leningrad one, took part in musical lectures. Karelian artists and performers have repeatedly received awards: orders and medals, certificates of honor. The Philharmonic also included pop groups, as well as chamber vocal, instrumental, opera and drama ensembles. From the very first years of its work, the Philharmonic Society maintained a creative connection with musicians from Moscow, St. Petersburg, various cities of Russia and other countries, therefore, the art of famous actors and performers was always available to the Petrozavodsk public.
Now in the Karelian Philharmonic there are concerts of the Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments, the Symphony Orchestra, as well as evenings of pop and jazz music. Concerts at tables and creative evenings are popular. Children are offered programs in the music lecture hall and children's music subscriptions.
International festivals are also held on the stage, these are "Autumn Lyre" - Days of Chamber Music, "Jazz Caravan", "White Nights of Karelia." prize to them. Dmitry Likhachev, which was founded by the Congress of the Russian intelligentsia. At the First Radio Festival of Symphony and Chamber Orchestras in Russia, held in 2002, the Karelian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra became a laureate in the nomination "For creative reading of a work." In October 2009, festive events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Philharmonic were held.
