Description of the attraction

The Siberian Birch Bark Museum, located in the city of Novosibirsk, is the world's only museum of contemporary art of birch bark carving.

The grand opening of the museum took place in June 2002 in a building - an architectural monument on Maxim Gorky Street, which was erected in 1917. Today it is called the "House with a Mezzanine". Initially, the house belonged to a wealthy merchant, after which the building was converted into a communal apartment. The museum fund was constantly replenished, therefore in 2004 the museum was provided with additional space practically in the very center of the city along Sverdlova Street. Today, the old building of the museum houses a branch, which was transformed in August 2012 into the Siberian House of Fairy Tales.

In the exposition of the museum, which is located in seven spacious halls, visitors can see a unique collection consisting of more than 400 exhibits of decorative and applied art made of birch bark, creations of folk craftsmen and professional artists of Siberia. This includes paintings, icons, various decorations, dishes, souvenirs, toys and many other interesting items. In the works of Siberian artists on birch bark, in addition to ancient household traditions, a new look at the possibilities of using birch bark in modern decorative and applied art is reflected.

The museum exposition presents works of birch bark art by 35 professional folk craftsmen and artists from Novosibirsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Kemerovo, Perm, Berdsk, Tomsk, Prokopyevsk, Khanty-Mansiysk, Altai, Mariinsk, etc.

The main task of the museum is the development and strengthening of the cultural traditions of the Russian and Siberian peoples, the formation of a fund of works by contemporary artists and masters of Siberia, as well as the study and popularization of arts and crafts.

There is a souvenir shop in the Siberian Birch Bark Museum, where you can buy various souvenirs, gifts and works of authorship made by modern craftsmen in the style of Russian folk crafts.
