Description of the attraction

A few years after the founding of the Dominican order, it was decided to build a Dominican monastery in Zurich. Construction began in 1231 with the construction of the church. The building is made in the Romanesque style and at first the church did not have a bell tower; it was added much later - at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. After a fire in 1330, a Gothic choir was added to the church. In general, the architecture of the church is somewhat unusual - the building and its bell tower are strikingly not combined, since the building of the temple is monumental, and the bell tower surprises with its grace.

This church became one of the main centers of the Reformation in Zurich. In 1524 the monastery, together with the church, was annexed to the neighboring hospital. As a result, the church was desecrated, the nave and choir were divided by a wall. Its decoration was badly damaged at the hands of Protestants, but after several decades the interiors were restored. The premises of the church began to be used for pressing grapes.

A century and a half later, the church was restored and reconstructed. However, from that moment on it became a parish Protestant church. Today the church continues to operate. It is open every day throughout the day. The church has its own library, where you can find a lot of literature on spiritual topics, and you can also turn to the clergy for spiritual advice or just pray.
