Description of the attraction
The Church of St. Cayetan is located in the southern part of the Old Town of Salzburg, in the immediate vicinity of the Nonnberg Abbey and the Cathedral. This imposing temple was built in the years 1685-1697 in the Italian Baroque style.
The building really amazes the imagination - it is a rather squat structure, the exterior of which is dominated by a huge dome with a drum. The main facade of the church is decorated with small Ionic columns.
The inside of the dome was painted by the young Austrian painter Paul Troger, who depicted the Triumph of Saint Cayetan, and in the lantern of the dome itself there is a small symbol of the Holy Spirit. One of the side altars is also dedicated to Saint Caetan, and the main altar depicts another patron of the cathedral - Saint Maximilian, an early Christian martyr. The main altar is amazingly decorated with a graceful canopy with figures of angels.
Of particular interest is another side altar dedicated to St. Anne. Earlier on this place there was a medieval chapel, dating back to 1150, consecrated in honor of this particular saint. The altar itself was made by the renowned late Baroque master Johann-Michael Rottmeier. In general, all the work on the interior decoration of the church was carried out in the first half of the 18th century, however, some details, including luxurious stucco molding, were added a little later. Also worth noting are the modern sculptures housed in the side chapels. As for the organ of the Church of St. Cayetan, it is the oldest in all of Salzburg - it has been preserved since 1700.
To get to the church, visitors need to climb the old staircase, which consists of 49 steps. It was built in 1712. Previously, the church was part of the monastery of the Teatin order, the founder of which was Saint Caetan, but in 1809 it was abolished, and a military unit was housed in the former monastery buildings. Now there is a hospital here.
