Description of the attraction

One of the oldest museums in the Poltava region is the Mirgorod Museum of Local Lore, which is located on Independence Street, 2. The museum was founded in 1920 on the initiative of the artist and art critic Afanasy Slasten.

Basically, the funds of the local history museum were completed on the basis of collections that were partially preserved in the manors' estates in the early 1920s. 20 Art. Over the course of several decades, the museum has been replenished with numerous new collections. Among them are materials from archaeological excavations, household items of different social strata of past centuries, antique furniture, unique things of the Cossack era, a library with several hundred books of the 18th - 19th centuries, documentary collections, including those of famous noble families, collections of musical instruments, folk embroidery, paintings by talented Mirgorod artists, as well as samples of folk painting from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century.

The funds of the Mirgorod Museum of Local Lore number over 15,000 exhibits, including collections of painting, numismatics and graphics, ceramics, Easter eggs, embroidery, everyday life and ethnography. Today, the museum has three permanent sections: "Ancient Mirgorod and Mirgorod region of the Cossacks of the early 18th-19th centuries", "Life and crafts of Mirgorod region of past centuries" and "Development of ceramics in Mirgorod region".

The museum is located in the place where in the 17-18 century. the Mirgorod fortress was located. In order to perpetuate the memory of this, in 2007, a Square of Cossack glory was opened in front of the museum building and a monument to the Mirgorod Cossacks and a memorial sign - a Cossack cannon - were erected.

The Mirgorod Museum of Local Lore constantly hosts excursions, conferences, art exhibitions, thematic hours, and social events.
