Description of the attraction

The Museum of Oceanography and Fisheries, located at the National Center for Marine and Fisheries Research, is considered the only specialized research institute in Ukraine. This organization is engaged in a detailed study of living marine resources. The database at the institute contains a huge amount of information based on the study of various industries related directly to the Azov-Black Sea basin, as well as the World Ocean region.

The desire to create a museum about flora and fauna arose after people began to learn from sailors traveling to distant countries about the species of fish and animals. They told various stories about seeing rather strange, but at the same time interesting creatures. Therefore, the city authorities decided to organize the exposition. Then people began to bring a variety of exhibits from different countries of the world to YugNIRO. The museum itself was opened in 1962. Over time, there were so many exhibits that it was necessary to increase the area of the museum. There was even a question of allocating a separate room in order to fit everything in one building. Since the premises were not found, the number of exhibits had to be limited.

It must be said that the museum's exposition consists of marine flora and fauna collected from all over the world. In total, the museum has about four thousand different exhibits. Traveling around the museum, you can find such objects: the goblin shark, which is now considered extinct, and the sawfish, which lives in the Indian and Pacific oceans of the Atlantic. Here we can also observe the unusual structure of the hammerhead shark's head, which gives it excellent volumetric vision, as well as the ability to smell blood for many kilometers. A special place is given to other interesting objects, for example, swordfish, marlin, sailfish (weighing up to 700 kilograms), stone perches about four meters long.

Tourists pay special attention when studying numerous representatives of crustaceans, for example, Kamchatka crabs - their paws reach up to two meters, horseshoe crabs (this species is more than 520 million years old), Black Sea lobsters, isopods, isopods, and bear crayfish. The museum also houses a huge variety of turtles, sea sponges, corals, penguins, and other interesting marine life.

A tour of the halls of the museum is always carried out with a guide who will tell you a lot of interesting facts about all the exhibits. The museum also organizes visiting exhibitions, where you can get acquainted with unique photographs taken during expeditions on different ships. At the same time, you can take a closer look at the various equipment that divers used, and get acquainted with the models of research and fishing vessels.
