Few people know that until 1972, when the first island resort of Kurumba opened in the Maldives, tourism as such simply did not exist there. There were only uninhabited islands and those where the locals lived. In the 60s, the UN Mission visited the Maldives and did not recommend developing tourism there.
Now the situation has changed dramatically. Now, for most travelers, the Maldives is by all means a secluded paradise resort far from civilization, where the hotel occupies the entire island, and besides you, the staff and other guests there is no one else there. Yes, in most cases it is. But the locals also have to live somewhere. Such islands are called local islands. Of course, everything is not so refined and luxurious there, but it is there that you can see the real life of the Maldivians, as it was 50 years ago. These are islands with fishing villages, farms, shops, street markets, traditional cuisine, holidays and festivals. This is the part of the Maldives that is often out of sight for most tourists.
Kurumba Resort is located just 10 minutes by speedboat from the International Airport near Male, the capital of the Maldives. There are also several other local islands around the island that are part of the North Male Atoll. Due to its unique location, the resort is an ideal starting point to explore the life of the local people. Here you are lounging in your villa or reading a book, lying in a hammock and sipping a cool cocktail, and an hour later you are walking around the local market and choosing souvenirs for friends and family.
