The current laws of life are such that we cannot afford to make a mistake in choosing a place for rest. Coming to the country at the wrong time means ruining your own vacation. Modern travelers are interested in the question of when is the best time to relax in the Czech Republic in order to get the most out of the trip? There can be no definite answer. The Czech Republic is beautiful all year round. The main thing is to understand exactly what this country has to offer at each time of the year.
Spring: educational tourism
In the spring, when it’s no longer cold, but the depressing heat, when you don’t want anything but cold beer or ice cream, it’s nice to discover the Czech Republic. That is, do not limit yourself to Prague alone, but boldly travel beyond its borders, exploring the cities closest to the Czech capital. In Prague there is the Florenc bus station, which can be reached by metro. Some independent weekend excursions begin from her. There are also several railway stations in Prague. In the center is the main railway station, from where trains depart for the main directions.
Be sure to go to the following settlements:
- Kutná Hora - a medieval silver mining center with many attractions;
- Pilsen is a large city with a compact historical center;
- Brandis nad Labem with its castle, which can only be visited from May to September.
Botanical gardens
Another reason to come to the Czech Republic in spring is to see the many plants in bloom in the Prague Botanical Gardens. And there are several of them. Perhaps the most popular local park with a pond, a Japanese garden, and a covered greenhouse for tropical flora is located in the Troy region and covers an area of 70 hectares. The botanical garden is open in winter, but it is most picturesque, of course, in the spring. Crocuses and snowdrops are the first to bloom in March. Then the period of the reign of colorful tulips begins, between the fields of which you can see areas with white and yellow daffodils. May in the botanical garden is a riot of smells and colors. You can endlessly walk along stone-paved paths between bright flower beds and clusters of trees covered with delicate colors. This kind of pastime never gets boring!
Summer: exploring castles
Most Czech castles are only open during the summer. This is due to the number of tourists, who are much more in summer than at other times of the year, and to the organization of the required temperature regime. Therefore, once in the Czech Republic in the summer, you should not miss the opportunity to see the maximum number of local castles.
The most interesting sites to visit are the former possessions of the Liechtenstein nobles - the Lednice and Valtice palaces, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and are seven kilometers apart. These castles are located in the south of the Czech Republic, about 60-62 km from Brno. To visit the Lednice-Valtice complex, the easiest way is to stay for a few days in Brno, the capital of the South Moravian region, a wonderful city with a rich history and a huge number of attractions. From Brno you need to take a bus to the town of Mikulov, from where you can get to Valtice in the same way.
Hiking
Hikers should come to the Czech Republic in the summer. Even without leaving Prague, they will find specially designed hiking trails on the slope of the Petřín Hill. Many paths end at the observation tower, which resembles the Eiffel Tower in its appearance. You can lie on the green lawns while resting on the way, or have a picnic.
A few dozen kilometers from Prague there is a small town of Pruhonice, famous for the castle of the same name, which is surrounded by a splendid park. Here you can spend the whole day enjoying the magnificent nature. In summer, about 100 species of azaleas and rhododendrons bloom here - an unforgettable sight. The park, which covers an area of 240 hectares, has a river with waterfalls, several ponds, a botanical garden, and an arboretum.
Holidays in the Czech Republic in autumn
The velvet season is the best time to visit the famous Karlovy Vary spa, a Czech spa with healing thermal springs.
The advantages of resting in Karlovy Vary in autumn are as follows:
- it is believed that the holiday season ends in August, so many hotels reduce prices for accommodation and treatment in the fall;
- the number of vacationers decreases several times, which allows you not to queue up for medicinal water and for the prescribed procedures;
- several interesting music festivals take place in Karlovy Vary in autumn. In September, groups performing ethnic music come here, and in October - ensembles playing jazz;
- Karlovy Vary is surrounded by a forest, which is especially beautiful in autumn. The city seems incredibly elegant against the background of bright yellow and crimson colors.
Christmas Czech
The Czech Republic is incredible even in the winter season. Better to relax in the Czech Republic when December just begins. If you are lucky with the weather, it will snow at this time, and the streets of Czech cities will be transformed, turning into illustrations for a fairy tale. In the evening, with the illumination on, the magic of the approaching Catholic Christmas will be especially felt. At the end of November, on the main squares of any Czech settlement, a lush real Christmas tree is erected, and next to it, enclosures with goats, a donkey, and rabbits are opened - a kind of reference to the Christmas nativity scene. The Christmas tree is usually surrounded by stalls selling juicy sausages, hot mulled wine, warm hats and scarves and all sorts of souvenir trinkets. Walking through such Christmas markets from counter to counter is a pleasure!
Gourmet Prague
There are always a lot of tourists in Prague, but on the eve of Christmas their number increases several times. Crowds of cheerful people fill the streets lined with gingerbread houses adorned with bright lights and sample Christmas treats in Prague restaurants. Many establishments serve Christmas baked carp with potato salad at this time. Local hostesses bake carp every Christmas since the 19th century. They say that this is a tribute to tradition and a memory of the past. In years of famine, river fish was the most popular dish available even to the poor.
A very tasty Christmas carp is prepared in the cozy historic Louvre cafe, which is located a few steps from Wenceslas Square - on National Avenue. This cafe is over a hundred years old. Albert Einstein, Karel Czapek and other celebrities were its regulars at one time.
Fun for Christmas
Where to go in Christmas Prague? To a concert where Christmas carols are played. Most often, such performances are held in churches, where luxurious acoustics allow you to fully enjoy the magnificent sound. But sometimes local musicians give concerts right in a cafe in the city center. Typically, in the lobbies of hotels, advertisements are posted with information about such events. You can ask hotel employees to book tickets.
Before Christmas, and indeed throughout the winter, there are about 7-8 skating rinks in Prague. In the historical center of the city (Prague 1) there are two skating rinks - on the Fruit Market and on Františka. In Prague 9, in the Arfa Gallery, a free skating rink is located right on the roof. On Saturdays it is open until 22.00.
