Problems in Iraq, at one time, significantly reduced the interest of immigrants in the Arab state. Although, in principle, there were not too many people willing to move here for permanent residence. An even smaller number of immigrants are interested in how to obtain Iraqi citizenship, since not so much rights are received by new citizens, but duties, responsibility is much higher.
In this article, we will try to answer the question of what mechanisms for obtaining citizenship exist in Iraq, on what principles they are based, are there any simplified options for obtaining an Iraqi citizenship document.
How can you get Iraqi citizenship?
The main sources of information indicate that Iraq, in general, is loyal to immigrants from different countries. The exception is Israel, a country whose citizens are subject to strict conditions. Currently, a new draft of the country's constitution is being prepared, which is interesting, in the first chapters of this important normative document it is noted that citizens of this Middle Eastern state can be obtained by citizens of any country in the world, with the exception of Israelis.
An important nuance of obtaining citizenship of the Republic of Iraq, first of all, here they are ready to accept foreign citizens who previously lived in Arab countries and have Arab origin. The main regulatory legal acts provide a list of the following grounds for obtaining citizenship: origin; residency qualification; integrity.
The first reason has already been mentioned above, it remains to recall that a citizen of any state has the right to apply for Iraqi citizenship, with the exception of Israeli citizens. The residence permit stipulates that a potential applicant for citizenship of the Republic of Iraq must permanently reside in the territory of the state, and for a certain period of time: 10 years - for Arabs, immigrants from Arab states; 20 years - for people from all other countries of the planet, representatives of different nationalities.
It is possible that the third condition may become the most difficult for potential applicants for citizenship of the Republic of Iraq. According to him, throughout the entire period of stay in the country, it is necessary to comply with the laws, avoid offenses, connections with criminals, etc. It is important that the Iraqi authorities have no complaints about the candidate for new citizens.
The Law of the Republic of Iraq "On Citizenship", adopted in 2006, provides for the institution of dual citizenship, which applies to indigenous Iraqis. When they make a decision to obtain citizenship of any other state of the planet, according to the law, there is no need to renounce Iraqi citizenship, of course, if this is allowed by the normative legal acts on citizenship in the country at the new place of residence.
The new provisions of Iraqi law prescribe the possibility of obtaining citizenship by children born of an Iraqi citizen and a foreign national. It is known that the topic of women and children in the legislation has become the most difficult subject of discussion, has caused great disagreements between representatives of different religious movements that exist today in the country. Earlier documents allowed cases of the conclusion of tanks between an Iraqi citizen and a citizen of a foreign state. Iraqi women did not have the right and the opportunity to choose a spouse who was a foreigner. Today this moment is spelled out in the law on citizenship, that is, the representatives of the beautiful half of Iraq have such an opportunity.
Other questions regarding Iraqi citizenship
The Citizenship Law in force on the territory of the Republic of Iraq, as the most important document in this area, introduces a provision on the impossibility of depriving a citizen of the country if he received citizenship by birth. On the basis of a legislative act, a person deprived of citizenship may demand restoration of his rights.
As mentioned above, the institution of dual citizenship operates on the territory of the republic, that is, an Iraqi can have two passports confirming that he is a citizen of two states. The exception is civil servants who are allowed to have only one citizenship, of course, of the Republic of Iraq. Upon entering a high position, he must write a written statement of renunciation of the citizenship of another state.
And another interesting provision, spelled out in the regulatory legal acts, states that you cannot use Iraqi citizenship in order to populate the country, since there is a possibility that the total immigration of foreigners can lead to a change in the ethnic composition of the population.
