"The air is fresh on the Riga seaside …", - says Vladimir Kuzmin, and it's hard to disagree with the popular performer! A beach vacation in Latvia will definitely appeal to those who prefer sea breezes to the stifling heat of distant exotic resorts. The discreet beauty of the Baltic nature will give a hundred points ahead of the motley banana republics in the eyes of those who value style, European comfort and the possibility of a leisurely and quiet contemplation of the surrounding reality. The Baltic beaches and white dunes, shaded by the emerald green of the pines, will long remain in your memory with a pleasant "aftertaste" of a vacation that is undoubtedly a success.
Where to go to sunbathe?
All beach resorts in Latvia are concentrated on the coast of the Baltic Sea and their names still evoke an aching nostalgia among the older generation of Russian tourists:
- The legendary Jurmala, the pearl of the Latvian beach crown, has gathered around a dozen resort villages, each of which offers its guests the best beach holiday in Latvia. Representatives of the local bohemia and foreigners come here, for whom communication with creative and intelligent people is an integral part of any vacation.
- Liepaja boasts beautiful and clean beaches, where the lucky ones still find the fossilized resin of prehistoric trees. Searching for amber, walking in the seaside park and enjoying medieval architecture with a cup of coffee in street cafes are on the schedule of every Liepaja guest.
- Ventspils is one of the youngest, but very vigorously developing Latvian resorts. The local beach has, among other advantages, a prestigious award - a Blue Flag certificate for cleanliness and environmental compliance.
All Latvian resorts offer a variety of hotels, guest houses and family boarding houses for different tastes and material wealth. Service even in the most inexpensive hotel will be at its best, and therefore on vacation in Latvia you should not overpay for the stardom and category of the hotel.
Having studied the reviews of previous guests, you can safely book rooms in boarding houses in advance - Latvian hotels strictly fulfill their obligations.
Weather features of a beach holiday in Latvia
It is difficult to name the Baltic seaside in Latvia a place where it is hot in summer. Rather, it is suitable for tourists who prefer to relax in a temperate climate zone so as not to have problems getting used to foreign weather. Maritime, with the transition to the continental climate of the country and the latitude at which it is located, provide a fairly cool summer with a lot of precipitation:
- The driest month in Jurmala is May, when it is still very cold to swim, but daredevils are already taking their first sunbathing on local beaches. The Baltic waters warm up to + 21 ° С only by mid-July and the swimming season lasts until the first half of September. In the air, thermometers show + 22 ° С in the first half of June, + 26 ° С in July and up to + 24 ° С at the end of summer. But in the second half of August heavy rainfall begins.
- Liepaja is called the city where the wind is born. Sea breezes here are a constant phenomenon, and therefore the air temperature on city beaches is slightly lower than in Jurmala, located a little to the north, but in a closed bay. The sea in Liepaja warms up only by the beginning of August, and therefore, even in July, there are not too many daredevils swimming on the local beaches. The air temperature averages + 23 ° С at the beginning of summer and rises to + 27 ° С at the height of the season. The nights in Liepaja are cool in September, but sunbathing and swimming are still comfortable.
- The maritime climate in Ventspils ensures cool and rather rainy summers. The average water and air temperature in early August in the daytime is + 19 ° C and + 25 ° C, respectively, and the swimming season lasts until mid-September.
A beach holiday in Latvia with children may seem uncomfortable due to the cool weather, but some resorts are quite suitable for kids too. For example, the sea in Assari and Melluzi warms up better due to the shallow coastal depth, and therefore even young travelers can swim on the local beaches with pleasure.
Jurmala and its whales
The resort villages near Jurmala are famous not only for the best beach holidays in Latvia. Its popularity is based on three pillars - recreation on the beaches, treatment and rehabilitation in local health resorts and the opportunity to organize a variety of cultural activities.
Treatment in Jurmala attracts those who like to relax in sanatoriums and combine business with pleasure. The local health resorts offer a variety of treatment programs to restore health. In Jurmala, they get rid of diseases of the respiratory system and the musculoskeletal system. The healing factors are sea and mineral water, air saturated with phytoncides and iodine, and healing mud.
The beaches of Jurmala have been repeatedly awarded with the Blue Flag certificate and are particularly clean. They are equipped with accessories useful for a spa person - changing rooms and toilets, sun loungers and umbrellas to protect from the sun.
For fans of active entertainment, Jurmala has prepared a lot of exciting things. The two water amusement parks "Nemo" and "Aqualandia" will be especially interesting for the younger generation, while the older ones will enjoy sailing trips, water skiing or the opportunity to play a game of golf and tennis. Equipment for any kind of sport can be rented right on the beaches.
Amber Legends
Going on a beach vacation in Latvia, do not forget to take a camera on your tour! In Liepaja, it is customary to look for amber, and fragments of the sun are still found on the white Baltic sand. Here you can also take pictures of the world's largest amber beads, the length of which is 123 meters, and the weight is almost 20 kg.
Sunbathing in Liepaja is a pleasure! The clean sand of the local beach is so fine and uniform that it is used for the manufacture of oven clocks.
It is also pleasant to spend time in Liepāja seaside park. It is called Jurmalas and runs along the city's waterfront.
