- Walks in Gagra and its sights
One of the most beautiful cities in the Republic of Abkhazia became widely known after the film starring the stars of Soviet cinema - Evgeny Evstigneev and Alexander Pankratov-Cherny. Only the name of the city is spelled differently today - the guest is expected to walk along Gagra (not along Gagra, as the title of the film sounds).
History and modernity
This beautiful city is more than two thousand years old, and the ancient Greeks had a hand in its foundation. Then, over time, Genoese and Turks came here, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Gagra became part of the Russian Empire. Its transformation into a real resort was facilitated by Prince Alexander of Oldenburg, the second great-grandson of Emperor Paul I.
At the end of the 20th century, Gagra suffered greatly as a result of the conflict and hostilities between Georgia and Abkhazia. Today the resort has practically recovered and gladly opens its sights, monuments and interesting places to guests.
Most of the time tourists spend on the famous beaches located in Old and New Gagra. Vacationers on the beaches in the old part of the city enjoy peace and quiet. Those who choose new beaches are immersed in a sea of fun, a variety of beach fun and active forms of entertainment.
Walking around Gagra and its sights
There are plenty of attractive places in Gagra, luxurious nature is the main wealth of the city, but not the only one. Here are preserved monuments of ancient history associated with different peoples and cultures.
One of the most ancient buildings of the resort is the Abaata fortress. It was erected on the bank of the river with the same name; the main builders in the 4th century were the Romans, who used large stones for masonry. Today, only ruins remain of the fortress, but they also give an idea of the ancient Roman architecture. Also in the city there are remains of another fortress, its construction dates back to the 6th century.
Among the younger architectural sights of Gagra, the following objects stand out: Gagra temple, erected on the territory of the fortress; the Art Nouveau palace that belonged to the Prince of Oldenburg;
Other interesting places in Gagra are associated with the peculiarities of the landscape and the beautiful southern nature. They are located both in the city center and in its surroundings. Local residents and guests of the resort love walks in the Seaside Park, founded at the beginning of the 20th century. In this heavenly place, you can see exotic flowers and shrubs, rare trees, black swans and goldfish swimming in an artificial reservoir.
